Geriatrics and Gerontology - About the journal
The journal Geriatrics and Gerontology is the official periodical of the Czech Gerontological and Geriatric Society of the Czech Medical Association of J. E. Purkyně, intended for physicians and non-physician healthcare professionals working in health and social services. The journal has been published four times a year since 2012 and follows on from the previous journal Česká geriatrická revue (Czech Geriatric Review), published between 2003 and 2010.
The journal is a peer-reviewed periodical that publishes original works across the entire spectrum of geriatrics and gerontology, research and review articles, as well as short communications and case studies, commentaries, diagnostic and treatment standards, and materials intended for continuing medical education (CME).
Publication ethics and statement on misconduct
The following text expresses the standards of ethical conduct for all parties involved in the publication of articles in the journal Geriatrie a Gerontologie: authors, editors, editorial board, reviewers, and publishers. These guidelines are based on the existing policy of Elsevier and the material The Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
1. Responsibilities of the publisher and editorial board
Decisions on article publication
The editor of Geriatrie a Gerontologie is responsible for deciding which articles accepted by the journal will be published. The editorial board makes the final decision on the publication of selected articles based on independent anonymous peer review. If necessary, a review by another reviewer may be requested. The editor follows the policy of the editorial board of the journal and the legal regulations that come into force in cases of defamation, copyright infringement, and plagiarism. The editor may consult with the editorial board or reviewers on his or her decisions.
Fair play
The editor evaluates the manuscript based on its intellectual content, regardless of the authors' race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnic origin, citizenship, or philosophy.
Discretion/confidentiality
The editor or any other member of the editorial board may not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the relevant author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisors, and the publisher.
Review process
All submitted manuscripts undergo a review process. The review process is double-blind (for both authors and reviewers). The final decision on publication is made by the chair of the editorial board together with the executive editors.
2. Reviewers' responsibilities
Review report
The double-blind review process contributes to the professional quality of articles and assists the editor in deciding whether to publish an article.
Reviewer eligibility
A reviewer who does not feel sufficiently qualified to evaluate an article should notify the editor and excuse themselves from the review process.
Discretion/confidentiality
Each manuscript accepted for review must be considered a confidential document by the reviewer and must not be shown or discussed with uninvolved people.
Objectivity
Reviews must be conducted objectively. Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate. Reviewers should express their opinions clearly and support them with arguments.
Disclosure and conflict of interest
Information or ideas obtained from reviews must be considered confidential and may not be used for personal gain. Reviewers should not evaluate manuscripts in which there is a conflict of interest arising from competitive rivalry, collaboration, or other relationships or connections with the author, company, or institution associated with the article.
3. Author responsibilities
Quality of articles
Each article must contain detailed information and references that allow readers to replicate the data. An article based on research must contain an accurate record of the work presented and an objective discussion of its significance. A condition for the publication of clinical research is that the procedures used comply with the ethical principles of the Declaration of Helsinki and have been approved by the relevant ethics committee. The same regulations must also be respected for work based on animal experiments. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable.
Originality and plagiarism
Only original works that have not yet been published anywhere else or submitted for publication to another journal will be accepted for publication. If the author uses the work or words of another author, they must be properly cited. If visual documentation published elsewhere is reprinted, the original source must be cited, and the written consent of the exclusive rights holder must be provided. Plagiarism, in all its forms, constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable.
Multiple, duplicate, or concurrent publication
In general, an author should not publish a manuscript describing the same research in more than one journal or primary publication. Acceptance of the same manuscript in more than one journal constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable.
Acknowledgment of sources
Authors should cite publications that may be important in determining the nature of the work. Information obtained privately, e.g., in conversation, correspondence, or discussion with third parties, must not be used or published without the express permission of the source.
Authorship of the article
Authorship should only apply to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the presented study or article. All those who contributed to the creation of the article or study should be listed as co-authors. Those who participated in important aspects of the project (research, article) should be identified or listed as contributors. The author should ensure that all appropriate co-authors are included in the article and that they have approved the final version and agreed to its submission for publication.
Conflicts of interest
Authors must disclose in their manuscript any financial or other significant conflicts of interest that could be construed as influencing the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support must be disclosed.
Fundamental errors in publishing
If an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in their published work, it is their responsibility to promptly notify the journal editor and cooperate in retracting or correcting the article.

The work is evaluated in terms of form and content by 1-2 anonymous reviewers, and based on their evaluation, the editor and editorial board make a final decision on whether to accept or reject it for publication. The editorial board reserves the right to make minor adjustments or shorten the manuscript. The author is obliged to respond to comments from the review process. Unsolicited manuscripts and attachments will not be returned.
Form of submission
Contributions are accepted exclusively in electronic form – as an attached file by e-mail, on CD, or DVD. The text of the acknowledgement, graphs, and images/photographic documentation must be placed in separate files.
Title of the work
The title must be concise and focused (max. 60 characters including spaces) and should not contain abbreviations; an English translation is mandatory.
Text and attachment format
The text of the paper must be written in one of the common text editors (in Windows, not Macintosh) in .doc or .txt format.
Tables, graphs, and linear diagrams must be in .xls (MS Excel) format, including source data in the case of graphs.
Photographic documentation must be submitted in jpg format with the required print resolution of 300 dpi.
Text processing
- The recommended text length is specified for each type of contribution (original work up to 15 standard pages, review article/case study up to 13 standard pages).
- The text must be submitted in a simple form without graphic editing (different font types and sizes, text division, fixed line spacing using the Enter key, frames, bullets, inserted graphs, images, etc.), preferably in 12-point font.
- Use a standard paragraph break (Enter key) to start a new paragraph.
- All attachments should be placed after the text of the work (i.e., after the bibliography) in the appropriate order.
- It is advisable to mark the places where graphic attachments are to be inserted in the text with a label (Fig. 1, Graph 1, Diagram 1, etc.).
- Tables are best created in MS Excel or in MS Word spreadsheet mode, or as inserted images (e.g., PowerPoint), but they must then be in a separate file, always including the source data (see above).
- Abbreviations should be used judiciously and sparingly, and each abbreviation should be explained when the abbreviated word first appears; abbreviations may only be used in summaries and headings in exceptional cases, if the text of the heading would be disproportionately lengthened by explaining the abbreviation.
- Physical and biochemical values (including blood pressure) should be given in SI units (ČSN 01 1300 or the publication International System of Units SI).
Structure of the original work:
1. Title page: title of the work, names of the author(s)

- References to the bibliography are indicated in the text by Arabic numerals in parentheses according to the order of appearance.
- Individual cited items in the bibliography are listed in the order of their appearance in the text, not in alphabetical order according to the initials of the first author. The formal layout of citations (literature) must comply with the journal's conventions, which are based on ČSN 01 0197 (ISO 690).
- The names of cited journals are abbreviated according to ČSN 010196.
- Only full citations are used, i.e., surname, abbreviation of the author's/authors' first name(s) (if there are more than three authors, the abbreviation et al. is used after the third author; for authors who are sons or fathers with the same first name, the abbreviations jr. or sr. are used for distinction; editors are listed in the same place as authors, but the abbreviation ed. or eds. is placed in parentheses after their list), the full title of the work in the original, and then for:
